1. The NMAT is open to all 4 - year graduates or graduating students
Are you worrying that you may not be eligible to take the NMAT because your pre-medical course is not science or medical-related?
Donāt worry. The NMAT is open to all students who have completed (or are graduating from) a four-year bachelor's degree program, regardless of pre-medical course. This means that as long as you have a bachelorās degree, whether a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts, you can still take the NMAT and be a doctor in the future!
2. The NMAT is a time-pressured exam
If you are planning to take the NMAT, you also have to prepare for the time limit on your exam.
NMAT Takers will only have 3 hours to complete Part 1, and 2 ½ hours for Part 2. With this, examinees must familiarize themselves with the look and feel of NMAT before their exam schedule.
Hereās a table of the recommended time you should allot per subject area/subtest as per the Center for Educational Measurement, Inc. or CEM:
The part 1 of the NMAT primarily measures the studentsā aptitude or natural abilities. This part of the NMAT focuses on basic concepts and principles, including Verbal Aptitude, Inductive Reasoning, Quantitative Skills, and Perceptual Acuity.
On the other hand, Part 2 of the NMAT allows students to recall items they have learned throughout their high school to undergraduate years. This part requires students to analyze and solve complex questions and also requires note-taking. The subtests include Biology, Physics, Social Science, and Chemistry.
3. Your NMAT score matters, but it is not the only requirement for medical school admissions
It is true that the higher your NMAT score, the higher your chances are to get into more medical schools. Especially if your target medical schools have NMAT PR requirements of as high as 90+, like the UP College of Medicine or the Ateneo de Manila University - School of Medicine and Public Health. Or even the University of Santo Tomas - Faculty of Medicine and Surgery or the St. Luke's College of Medicine - William H. Quasha Memorial Foundation which both have a minimum NMAT PR of 85+.
But even if you donāt get that high of a score, you are eligible to get into most medical schools in the Philippines if you get an NMAT percentile rank of at least 40. Here are the 20 medical schools in Metro Manila that you can get into based on your NMAT PR.
However, it is not the only determining factor for medical school admissions in the Philippines. Some medical schools require specific subjects that you should have, a recommendation letter, or a certain grade requirement from your bachelorās degree.
Nevertheless, while it is not the only requirement to get into medical schools, having a high NMAT score certainly gives you a more competitive edge.
